  • Developers are responsible for building and maintaining much of technology we use today.
  • As companies become more tech-driven, they need developers to work on software, data, and  security.
  • Insider broke down the different types of developers, their skill sets, and their salaries.

From data to cloud software, tech has become more important and widespread than ever for businesses of all sizes across industries. And companies as varied as Google and Coca-Cola are rapidly hiring developers to maintain the code, data, systems, and security of new and old technologies.

Developers manage and maintain the building blocks of most of the tech we use every day, whether the newest video games or something as technical as customer-relationship-management software. Because of this, they are some of today’s most sought-after employees, making anywhere from $100,000 to as much as $270,000 for some roles at top companies like Square, LinkedIn, and Roblox.

Since technology itself has become such a big part of life, there are many types of developers who maintain a diverse set of systems and processes. For example, a security developer, who tests the integrity of any software, will have a much different job from a web developer, whose job is to build and improve websites. While there is a lot of overlap in the skills needed for most developers, the tools, coding languages, and responsibilities of different developers can look very different from day to day.

Insider looked at the different types of developers, what they do, their salaries, and what skills make these positions the right fit for an industry newcomer.
