Anti-ageing serums are where brands put their most cutting edge science, so if any product is going to perform a skincare miracle, it’s going to be one of these.
But do skincare miracles really exist? They certainly get pretty close according to the real women who tested this year’s crop of bigger-and-better-than-ever serums for the Real Beauty Awards.
We picked out the biggest launches, and sent each serum to five different women to use for a month, and it’s their reviews that decided the awards.
Anti-ageing serums are all about targeting fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dark spots and dullness – and that’s just what our winners did.
Premium serums (£40+)
WINNER: Elizabeth Arden Prevage Anti-Aging Daily Serum 2.0, £180 (currently only £120.60 here )
Already a serious heavyweight in the anti-ageing serum sector, now new and improved for 2021. Our testers loved it.
Tester says: “Saw a visible difference in just a week. My skin appears to have a healthy bloom. Fine lines disappeared with deeper lines greatly reduced. Areas of darker pigmentation visibly improved. Skin was firmer and smoother with a plumped up feeling.”
HIGHLY COMMENDED: Clinique Smart Clinical Repair Wrinkle Correcting Serum, £55 (now just £46.75) here
Smoother, firmer, brighter – testers loved the effects of this serum from the first use.
Tester says: “Wrinkles were definitely less visible. Skin felt firmer and looked visibly plumped in areas. My partner noticed a difference – he said my skin was brighter. I thought it was good value for money, only a small amount was needed.”
HIGHLY COMMENDED: Origins Plantscription Multi-Powered Youth Serum, £67 here
Great anti-wrinkle results and a radiance boost too – testers were thrilled with this plant-powered reformulation.
Tester says: “Definitely gave a glow to my skin. Friends commented that I looked refreshed and asked if I’d upped my exercise regime as they felt my skin looked healthier. I did notice finer lines had reduced considerably.”
HIGHLY COMMENDED: L’Occitane Overnight Reset Serum, £50 here
Testers loved the softer, glowier and younger feeling skin this luxe serum gave them.
Tester says: “I was super excited to try this and I thought it was a lovely product. Super easy to use and offers fab results. You don’t need to use too much so this lovely little bottle could easily last four months or so.”
Mass market serum (under £40)
WINNER: NIVEA Cellular Luminous630 Anti Dark Spot Serum, £29.99 now £19.99 here
This pigmentation-fighting, radiance-boosting cream also held a strong line in wrinkle bashing. An all-round winner.
Tester says: “My skin looks glowing. So smooth and the colour is more even. Work colleagues noticed a difference after about week three. I’ve recommended this product. I have never really been much into serums although I have used them now and again. This really has made a positive impact on my skin and my own sense of well-being.”
HIGHLY COMMENDED: No7 Advanced Ingredients Ceramides & Peptides Facial Capsules, £19.95 here
Testers said these capsules made a visible difference to wrinkles and also improved skin tone.
Tester says: “My fine lines were less visible and my skin felt silky and smooth to the touch. It made me feel more confident about my skin – and I love the biodegradable packaging.”
HIGHLY COMMENDED: Beauty Pie Japanfusion Genius Lift Elixir, £9.52 here (members’ price)
This serum certainly gave results good enough to justify the Beauty Pie membership fee.
Tester says: “I was very impressed with this product. I’ve seen visible results and it was lovely to use. I would definitely purchase this as part of my routine. Lovely packaging, looks very nice on my dressing table and gives me the results I want in an anti-ageing serum.
